Hi guys,
I thought I would share with you some pictures of my attempt to build a cockpit. This is the "Desk-top" version and is the template for something more advanced down the track.
What you see here is a way to get around having to remove the yoke, throttle quad and pedals should you wish to use the desk as a desk!.
The screens:
Screen 1 and screen 6 are on seperate computers while the 4 in the centre are attached via 2 video cards to one computer.
This shot shows the folded support frame used for the Yoke. The legs are from an old fold-down table and modified for this application
This shot shows the Throttle Quad and my own trim wheel in the fold-down position.
Ready for action...take about 5 seconds to 'ready the ship'
The Throttle quad is mounted to a fold-down shelf bracket. The unit is held in position using a strong magnetic "button" mounted to the frame and it comes into contact with a metal stop when the unit is swung out into position. The magnet stops the unit from moving when the throttled arms are moved.
(note the magnetic button in the bottom right corner of the pic.).
The trim wheel is made using a laundry trolly wheel purchased from the local hardware store. It connects to the (now defunct) mixture control on the Yoke. I used a PS2 mouse lead and connector from an old computer (never throw anything out!) with a potentiometer attached to the trim wheel.
The next three photos show the yoke mounted to the converted table legs and the attachment of the legs to the desk. By the way, I purchased the desk with this set-up in mind.
....viewed from underneath.
The table legs were shortened to suit. Saddles were used to attach to a wooden frame and the throttle quad mounted to the frame with the standard clamp nuts.
Well that's about it. Please feel free to contact me if you require more technical info about any aspect of this project. _________________ Gregg Kirkwood
